2009-10-21 WordPress Patched
Finally some more or less security related patches to WordPress 2.8.4 have been released yesterday resulting in version 2.8.5. Some of my code went in as well, so hopefully ranting did work out. I was not able to fully review the update but most eval and create_function “breakpoints” have been removed for now.
The release is entitled as beign a “hardening release” by the official Blog. What does that mean? Very simple, it’s hardening because WordPress is not aware of actual exploits to their codebase but they are clever enough that they can assume it actually should be exploitable. I would call it hardening if they pick up some weeks doing a full code review and refactoring. This would acutally make sense while switching to PHP 5 but this is currently not on the WordPress agenda. Next PHP Version for WordPress will be PHP 4.4.x. You may ask now, what is the opposite of hardening? So this is another step on the long way of WordPress to a more mature codebase. If code would be poetry, then WordPress code is the crap you would get next to a supermarket’s cashpoint.
The hacking business model
askmonty.org is hosting a document called The hacking business model. It describes in pretty much detail how the interests of a developer towards the company she/he is working for and vice versa could be formulated.
You can find some working principles in there, like 80/20, customer centered design and open source project donations. I think it’s pretty much backed-up with the experiences in the “virtual” company MySQL.
This might not well adopt for most of the companies you know but the read can be inspiring nevertheless.
2009-10-15 Selbstorganisiertes Marketing auf dem Barcamp Mainz
Die Mobilfunk Branche ist hierzulande bekannt dafür für kreative Marketing Aktionen zu sorgen. Die Vodafone Kampagne ist schon einige Tage raus aus dem Twitter-Durchlauferhitzer, da macht nun ein anderer Hersteller was Hersteller nun mal so machen: auf seine Produkte aufmerksam. Samsung in Zusammenarbeit mit der Agentur Wolf & Motoori und dem Barcamp Mainz (#bcmz, @bcmainz) haben sich für ihre aktuelle “Technikverbesserungsaktion” was ganz besonderes ausgedacht: In der Phase 2 (Stichwortgeber auch hier und hier) wird das Barcamp Mainz nicht nur als Forum in Form von Vorträgen für die Kampagne genannt, es stellt auch dank Workshops die am Barcamp gehalten werden einen integralen Bestandteil des Marketing-Events dar:
In Phase 2 sollen aus der Marktforschung Schlüsse gezogen und diese für einen Vortrag aufbereitet werden. Bei einem [...] Barcamp [...] in Mainz werden dann die Vorträge gehalten. Aber das ist noch nicht alles: beim Barcamp finden außerdem Workshops statt, die darauf zielen, eine [...] Applikation mit dem Telefon zu testen oder eine entsprechende Erweiterung selbst in Zusammenarbeit mit den dortigen Spezialisten zu entwickeln [...]. Im Barcamp werden also unterschiedliche Applikationen oder Applikationsideen entstehen, die in einer Präsentation vorgestellt und bewertet werden.
Eine erfreuliche Nachricht für jeden Werber das sich das Barcamp so kooperativ einbringt.
Laut Website möchte das Barcamp Mainz sich bewusst von kommerziellen Veranstaltungen abgrenzen:

Na ja, es ist ja noch ein bischen Zeit das alles ins rechte Licht zu rücken und das dann mit ein wenig Abstand zu betrachten.

Guessing the nobel peace prize winner has never been so easy than this year.
The only thing you need to do is to be a little creative, let’s say looking for those great beings having a different aproach than an outdated and totally un-modern concept called peace. To command one of the largest armies on the most active battlefields all over the planet since years is a good to go for this time. So it was amazingly clear, that Obama will make it this year. Hey, that was really hard to guess folks!
Nobel still has more steam in the pipe!
Yet not officially announced, but there will be a nobel price for climate change. Suggestions are to honor the man who is considering a nuclear winter as the best solution to stop global warming while taking care to recycle outdated warheads from the cold war.
