2007-09-20 No Excuse for Linksys

What does a Linksys Support Operator tells you if you want to create a WLAN with a Repeater? You should get a Linksys WAP54g and WRE54g. You ask him: “Does this work together?” and he says “yes it does”. If you now think you should do this, let me tell you, that for me it does did not work. Even not after numerous phonecalls to the really fast on the phone freecall support personell – but it does not help. Right now after countless hours of configuring these linksys products, some quick facts:

Tomorrow I’ll put that into Tech-Supports ears as well, but I’m now really feed up with their products not working together.

Update & Solution: Before installing anything, call techsupport, tell them nothing works and you already have the latest firmware from their public website installed. Then they give you the address of another offical linksys website, a username and a password that is changed once a week (my then now not working any longer credentials were u:linksys p:beta3912). I downloaded the software there and it worked right away.

A warning for mac and linux users I talked with the tech support about problems with their webinterfaces (it produced javascript errors in all my browsers). They told me, they test their webinterfaces with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 only. Well I could not found that browser on my linux as well as on my mac osx box and therefore I think you should consider to not buy linksys products if you’re using an apple or linux driven computer. Since the Linksys-Brand will be out of the market and replaced by cisco products it’s pitty to say you need to exclude cisco consumer products in future as well.
